Abstract The US Department of Energy is working with fuel vendors to develop accident tolerant fuels (ATF) for the current fleet light water reactors (LWRs). ATF should be more resilient loss coolant scenarios and help extending life operating LWRs. One proposed concepts use iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloys cladding fuel. A concern in using ferritic FeCrAl that this type may result an increase concentration tritium coolant. objective critical review collect assess information from literature regarding diffusion or permeation hydrogen (H) its isotopes deuterium (D) Tritium (T) across industrial (including FeCrAl) used intended nuclear industry. Over a hundred years data reviewed shows solubility lower than austenitic but permeates faster through material materials. rates are between those stainless steels FeCr steels. activation energy approximately 30 pct higher compared (typically ∼ 50 kJ/mol vs. 65 austenitic).
